Methamphetamine, commonly known as “meth” is an incredibly addictive drug. While it is occasionally imported from Mexico, Asia or other states, it is usually manufactured locally in secret “labs.”

The illegal manufacturing of the drug has skyrocketed in the past five years.  The process for ‘cooking’ homemade meth is very dangerous and often results in fires and explosions.

The process involves toxic and combustible materials including sulfuric acid, anhydrous ammonia, lye, ether, and red phosphorus.  The one ingredient that must be present is ephedrine or psuedoephedrine. These are frequently shoplifted by meth makers.  That is why local retailers are now required to keep medicines like Sudafed and Actifed behind the counter.
